What is Nanotechnology?

Developed by engineering and chemistry and known as a hybrid science, nanotechnology is a very good practice if applied by successful people. Various applications have been implemented thanks to nanotechnology. The general definition of nanotechnology is to interfere with the matter at the atomic level. In this way, the main purpose is to play with the molecules of the substance and to create new substances.

The word nano serves as a prefix that means midget-very small and derives from the Greek word. Nanotechnology is generally known as the process of reducing matter to atomic size. 1/1000000000 process is done to reduce the matter to atomic size. The substance is reduced to billions of parts and re-processed. As the matter gets closer to the nanoscale, many benefits of matter emerge, unlike macroscopic separation. If we assume that we put a bar of gold on the nanoscale, it can be seen that the gold takes red and blue colors according to the piece size.

Development of Nanotechnology
Nanotechnology was founded by Mihail C. Roco. Nanotechnology studies were first started in 1974 by Norio Taniguchi. The studies of modern nanotechnology started in 1981. This year, at the same time, the microscope called the tunneling microscope, which allows us to see atoms, was invented. Thanks to this invention, nanotechnology studies have been much relaxed, accelerated, and developed.

Today, nanotechnology has advanced based on showing the technologies found with more advanced sensitivity and reduction. It is being developed more and more every day. It is an endless technology that can be developed and used forever. Nanotechnology applications; It is a technology that can be studied in many scientific fields such as engineering, space, electronics, industry, mechanics, computers, technology, environment, chemistry, medicine, biology, and physics. The foundations for these sciences to advance this much were laid with nanotechnology and these sciences continue to be developed with nanotechnology.

Nanotechnology studies affect many different industries today. Transportation, energy sector, communication sector, health sector, defense/security sectors, etc. These studies, which closely concern many sectors, have a very important place in the world.

The 4 development phases of nanotechnology announced by Mihail C. Roco can be listed as follows:

First Generation: Nanotechnology products are known as Passive Nanostructures. These products are designed to perform only one task.
Second Generation: Nanotechnology products known as Active Nanostructures. These structures are known as “Multi-tasking” substances that can perform more than one task, and their work continues.
Third Generation: Nanosystems, that is, nanotechnology products consisting of thousands of different substances working in communication with each other.
Fourth Generation: Unified nanosystems, i.e. nested nanosystems products that can perform very complex tasks.
Exactly How Much Is The Size Used In Nanotechnology?

The unit of measurement used in nanotechnology is nanometer, namely Nm. Each nanometer represents 3 to 5 atoms. An atom is approximately 1/40000 the thickness of a human hair. This is an average measure. Human hair strand thicknesses may differ from each other. The sizes of atoms are also not exact. Different atoms have different weights and occupy. To be more precise, it would be appropriate to say that an A4 sheet of paper is 100000 nanometers.

How is nanotechnology used today?
Nanotechnology already benefits from areas such as healthcare, environment, energy, and national security. Precise targeting of cancer cells deep in the body; removal of pollutants from groundwater and soil; improving the performance of solar panels; improving the detection of chemical and biological weapons; and preventing infections in wounds are just some of the ways nanotechnology has improved our world. Scientists and businesses are exploring new ways in which nanotechnology can help solve societal problems and improve products.

How is Nanotechnology Used in the Energy Field?
There are unlimited energy sources in the world, while some of these energy sources are renewable energy sources, some of them are non-renewable energy sources. Nanotechnology intervenes in energy resources and enables them to spread over a wider area. In this way, it is aimed not to leave an area without an energy source in the world. Nanotechnology is a factor that affects the world stock market a lot in this regard.

The world’s need for energy is increasing day by day. Energy sources are used for different functions every day. Nanotechnology prepares the environment for the production of alternative energy sources, preventing the destruction of non-renewable energy sources completely. The required energy is given to the world by increasing the formation of renewable energy resources. Many scientists have developed studies on increasing renewable energy sources on this subject. In this way, non-renewable energy resources are protected. Besides, non-renewable energy sources cause serious damage to nature.

Scientists are working on alleviating the burden on nature and reducing energy consumption in line with these studies. Thanks to nanotechnology, the environment is protected and the world extends the healthy life. It is aimed to minimize air pollution, water pollution, and soil pollution.

Some of the efforts to achieve this are as follows:

Thanks to nanotechnology studies, gasoline is produced from crude oil. In this way, the friction is at the lowest level and the amount of gasoline consumed by the cars is reduced. This investment, which has been made correctly for the public, is an investment that aims to minimize the damage of gasoline to the air. It has been developed thanks to nanotechnology and its benefits are enormous.
By using carbon nanotubes, it is aimed to pass a low electrical current through electrical wires. In this way, wasted electrical energy will be preserved. There is a lot of electricity loss during transfer. Minimizing this situation will help the electrical energy to be used longer, as well as preventing power plants from working too much and leaving a negative impact on nature. It is also considered an advantage for less dam construction.
Thanks to nanotechnology, it is planned to increase the efficiency of solar panels. In this way, the prices will be reduced. It is thought that the new panels to be made will be paper-thin. In recent studies, it is said that paints will be used as solar panels and thus more efficiency will be obtained. This application, which will make good use of solar energy and cause less financial damage for the public, is expected.
Windmills are among the products to be produced with nanotechnology. According to the new technology, windmills will have longer arms. It is also known to be lighter and stronger. Thus, the electricity generated will increase and relief will be provided. It is also said that dams will not be needed in the future.
Lightings, which are called efficient lighting systems, will spread all over the world in a short time and the amount of energy spent on these systems will be minimized.
Benefits of Nanotechnology
Nanotechnology is a completely environmentally friendly system. All the work done is about reducing the burden placed on nature. Although this was not the purpose when nanotechnology was first established, the fact that today’s nature has been exposed has revived people and prepared the environment for these studies to begin. All of the products produced are products that are extremely necessary for both health and nature. Using the energy produced by the world by making it more efficient with easier ways is only possible with nanotechnology.

Nanotechnology benefits not only in the energy sector but also in many other sectors. If the work that engineers had to do in the past was 4 hours, it was converted and expanded with nanotechnology and the work was reduced to half an hour. Various studies are carried out in many other areas such as this. This technology, which increases work efficiency, has also contributed to the faster development of the world. Technology has advanced, things have gotten easier. Many jobs are now easily controlled, even from home. Thanks to nanotechnology, people get less tired and have the opportunity to spend more time with their families and themselves. Therefore, it should be expanded more and used more.
