Greetings to all, dear Only A Gamer followers. After a long time, I am here with a review of a game that has a great place in the game world. Contrary to popular belief, the attempt to the Mafia series was with Mafia 2, not the first Mafia game. For me, it was that friendship between Mafia, Vito, and Joe. I don’t think I need to tell you how much reaction Hangar 13 got in Mafia 3. I also wanted to play the first Mafia game that debuted in 2002. However, I was afraid that it might disturb me in terms of the gameplay dynamics, and many years passed. I set my mind on the idea of being able to play it later, but when I was informed that the Mafia Trilogy was announced and the first game would be completely remade, I was blown away and realized that I could play the first game of Mafia in a modern way. The game is here with its renewed version after 18 years. Welcome to the Mafia Definitive Edition review.
Game: Mafia: Definitive Edition

GREAT RETURN AFTER 18 YEARS
Developed by Illusion Softworks affiliated with 2K and published by 2K Games, Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven first appeared on PC in August 2002. Then it came to Xbox and PlayStation 2 consoles in 2004. It was not expected that the legendary series would become a series at that time and would be so popular. Especially the Mafia-themed games, series, movies, animations fueled by The Godfather series, this theme, which still affected in 2002, took place in a beautiful game. The production, which contains many aspects such as many classic vehicles, the atmosphere of the city of Lost Heaven, the relationship of the Mafia groups, was a great blessing for that year. Even though Mafia 2 came out and got its popularity from the first game after 8 years, it remained an unforgettable game for that period. Here is the legendary game, with the decision taken exactly 18 years later, with the Remake version. The game is completely rebuilt and the main script, characters, etc. elements such as. We can say that Mafia has stepped up the modernity of today. This was also a big improvement for those who did not play the first game as there are a huge improvement and modernization of the game. How about Mafia: Definitive Edition? Let’s talk together.
THE STORY OF A TAXI DRIVER
Sir, isn’t this the Mafia game? What do you say taxi driver or something? These questions may have crossed your mind, but let’s be calm. Yes, the story of a taxi driver is told in Mafia: Definitive Edition. Perhaps the most beloved character in the Mafia series, Tommy Angelo appears at the very beginning of the story as a taxi driver. Tommy Angelo, an ordinary taxi driver in Lost Heaven, coincides with a night-time clash of Mafia groups and finds two of the band members, Paulie and Sam, in his taxi. Tommy Angelo, who unwittingly helps Paulie and Sam, who work for Don Salieri, takes a step into the underground world by evaluating the offer from Salieri. You are a normal taxi driver and suddenly you become a Mafia guy. Such is a coincidence. Tommy Angelo’s character is the best in the series in my opinion. We can say that he is a smoking addict. Does the man smoke in every scene he appears, friend? Tom drinks yes. Although he is addicted to smoking, he does not get into alcohol much. It leaves it in taste. Tommy Angelo, who started doing things for Salieri, makes new friends, listens to many stories, and finds his love. It wouldn’t be good to go into more detail because I don’t want to give spoilers.
The game deals with character development as a taxi driver breaks into one of the Lost Heaven mob groups and goes through the events he goes through. On the other hand, we have the opportunity to see firsthand the Mafia stories and how these groups govern a city, and what kind of power they have during the period from 1930 to 1938. The game is quite successful in terms of story and storytelling. It is confirmed by fans of the series that it is also loyal to the original game. Who would have thought that an ordinary taxi driver would be Salieri almost the best man?
GAMEPLAY ASSESSMENT (PART 1 – TOOLS)
The gameplay really deserves appreciation. While I was playing the game, I did not experience any boredom, not being able to enjoy it due to the mechanics. First of all, it is necessary to take a look at the driving dynamics of the cars. Vehicle driving has been very high quality. Especially when you simulate the car driving mode from the game’s settings, you can feel the suspension of your vehicle and the changing reactions of your tires on different road types and weather conditions. Vehicle control becomes more difficult when you turn in rainy weather. You can have very real experience in the simulation vehicle mode, especially in car chase sequences that include action. Also, you can leave your enemies and police behind by passing through the places where work is done. Speaking of police, when you cross the speed limit in the game or when you crash into a vehicle, there is an automatic search if there is police nearby. I even witnessed the police being sought while accidentally hitting someone’s vehicle and running away. Even if I do not live in person, it is possible to get rid of small accidents by paying your punishment.
In the game, there are scenario tasks that can be done with a vehicle such as chasing a car, running from the police, and catching up to a place. This shows that vehicles are important. I can say that vehicle physics is number ten. A very realistic experience is provided especially when driving with the gamepad. Speaking of vehicles, we can say that the vehicles are very important in the game. Most of the legendary classic cars of those years are in the game. Thanks to Carcyclopedia, you can take a look at the cars you encounter in the game and test drive. Besides, you can drive and roam around with Free Ride mode, which is independent of the story.
GAMEPLAY ASSESSMENT (PART 2 – CONFLICT)
Since the game is a Mafia game, conflict is of great importance. Actually, the conflict in the game goes from slow to fast. While there are fist-to-hand combat missions at the beginning of the game, we can go to beat men with a stick in the later stages. In close combat, we can avoid the attacks of our opponents and attack and kill the enemy with a special finish sequence. The intervention of this sequence allows us to feel a great sense of conflict in close combat.
As we progress in the game, our variety of weapons and action increases. This makes it possible for Tommy Angelo, a regular taxi driver, to adapt to this world with level increases. The gunfight scenes of the game are quite similar to the Gears of War series. It is generally based on the dynamics of taking cover and shooting. With you, your enemies take cover and a real sense of conflict is provided. The feeling of the hit is pretty good. You can feel the reaction of the enemy hitting, but the weapons have a lot of bounce. It can be difficult to kill enemies depending on the distance and weapon types. With a pistol, we can only kill a man with 3-4 bullets. This situation reminds us that our character is not actually a hitman. Like Call of Duty games, we cannot take down enemies in one and move forward quickly. We have to proceed carefully and choose proper trenches.
When your health is low, it doesn’t fill up automatically. Only if you do not take damage for a few seconds when it gets too low, there is a slight increase. Apart from that, you can find the first aid boxes in the game and fill all of your life. Aim support is also available for those who play the game with a gamepad. Apart from these, we can also shoot from inside vehicles. In some missions, the game directly demands this from us and makes our bullets unlimited. In some missions, you can also squeeze with your friends, but your bullets may run out. The conflict part is based on these foundations.
EVALUATION OF GAMEPLAY (PART 3 – PROGRESS)
The game has a “Linear” progression style with the original alien name that we proceed straight depending on the story. This smooth progressive gameplay system is mostly included in games that we do not want to break from the story and we want the game to take us away. Mafia: Definitive Edition greets us as a game that should have a completely linear progression genre. A very correct choice has been made as to the type of progress. There are 20 separate chapters of the story. All of these episodes consist of different missions, conflicts, and cinematic scenes. You sit at the head of the game and leave yourself to these parts. You can finish the game perfectly smoothly with a straight progression. Although the game seems to have an open world, it is based on the main missions. The game asks us to immerse ourselves in these episodes and dive into the story of the game.
GRAPHICS AND ATMOSPHERE
It is possible to say that the game offers a graphic and atmosphere worthy of 2020. Mafia: Definitive Edition, which is suitable for the new generation after 18 years and has very modern graphics, manages to dazzle. Using a technology called Motion Capture in Turkish, which is Motion Capture, the facial expressions of the actors who animate the characters in the intermediate scenes were taken exactly. Although some scenes are shown directly with Motion Capture as a hardware-independent movie, some cutscenes appear as processed by the game engine. The details of the vehicles, the design of the environment, the reflection of the lights, and the moon in the dark of the night from the puddles when it rains, the lights of the vehicle headlights make the graphics power. As an atmosphere, we can really live those years to the fullest. Details such as the people around, vehicles, shop types, and weapon types in those years position the atmosphere of the game in a very harmonious way with the year of the game.
SOUND – MUSIC
The sound effects and music used in the game were also very suitable. Especially the dramatic, cinematic thrillers and action music used in car chase scenes, conflict sequences, and intermediate cinematic scenes manage to pull you into the game. Thanks to the sound and music, I can say that I was very excited while playing the game and I felt like I was in a movie.
The length of the game is about as much as the average first game as it is faithful to the original game. According to Howlongtobeat’s data, the game has a main story that lasts for 11 hours. Since the game is heavily based on the main story, you can extend the game to a maximum of 15 hours, but the game can end in 10 hours on average. There are a total of 20 levels in the game. These sections are divided into 5 different years. The episodes of the play begin in 1930 and end in 1938. 4 episodes were added to each year for the years 1930, 1932, 1933, 1935, and 1938. While some of these missions can take 10-15 minutes, some tasks can take up to 30-45 minutes. Some episodes can take even 1 hour if you make a mistake or can’t find what to do. The length of the gameplay is quite sufficient for me because it is faithful to the original game and it provides fluency.
Successful story and storytelling
Careful gameplay mechanics
Strong graphics and atmosphere
A successful main character
Gameplay that offers a fluid progression type
Minor optimization issues.
Freezing or throwing issues.
Some graphical bugs and glitches.
Mafia: Definitive Edition was definitely a must-have production in the series. The fact that the first game was already out of date enabled this game to be released in today’s modernity and accordance with the new generation. This removal was a very logical and correct decision. The game provides a very successful experience for the players in every aspect.
OVERALL GAME SCORE: 9/10
